Cross-Arm stretch (to warm up the upper back)

Updated: Jan 1, 2021

This is an excellent stretch to losen you up between the shoulder blades in your upper back. Excellent before strenuous upper body work or working out. Good to releave upper back discomfort, in fact I find a lot of my patients start doing this on their own naturally. If you are doing repetitive work with your hands, say at an assembly line, you can use this as a micro-break to ease discomfort between the shoulder blades and to break up static posture by stepping away for a moment to do them.

To do this stretch, reach across to the front to the opposite shoulder as if you were going to scratch the back of that shoulder. Place the opposite hand on your elbow as shown. No push the arm across your chest as if reaching for a spot further back on you shoulder. Feel for a comfortable stretch to the back of the shoulder and shoulder blade. Hold the stretch for 10-15 seconds, then switch sides. Do 2-3 on each side.
