First Aid techniques for Low Back Pain / Sciatica

First Aid technique for Low Back Pain / Sciatica: When low back pain hits and you are just miserable and are having to wait to be seen. Or when your pain is slow to resolve and you just need some relief, what do you do to get a break or some rest? Well, the supine flexed position shown above may help. Laying on your back with the hips and knees flexed and resting over pillows will decompress discs and spinal joints and frequently give some respite. This often works for pain that is running down the leg. Personally, I steal the couch cushions to get myself in good position, but pillows may be enough. Try to stay at least 15-20 minutes. This decompression allows augmentation of the fluid exchange in the disc as well, allowing nutrition to move from the surrounding blood stream into the disc, nourishing it. If you can find time/place to do this in the mid-day, outside of your sleep time, this can help to give an extra influx of fluid/nutrition into your disc which has little blood supply. I tend to choose this position for low back patients to finish a session when applying heat and electrical stimulation and if helpful advise patients to use it for self management at home.
